What's 'irregular'?

A typical cycle is 21–35 days. Irregular means cycles shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days, or varying by more than 7–9 days month to month.

Common causes

  • PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)
  • Thyroid disorders (hypo- or hyperthyroidism)
  • Stress, over-exercise, low body fat
  • Perimenopause
  • Hormonal birth control changes
  • Hyperprolactinemia
  • Uterine fibroids or polyps
  • Endometriosis

When to see a doctor

  • 3+ missed periods (and not pregnant)
  • Cycles consistently shorter than 21 days
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Severe pain or very heavy flow
  • Sudden change after years of regular cycles
