What are fibroids?
Non-cancerous growths of the uterus, very common (up to 70–80% of women by age 50). Size ranges from a seed to a grapefruit.
Types
- Intramural: Within the muscular wall of the uterus (most common).
- Subserosal: On the outer wall, can press on bladder or bowel.
- Submucosal: Bulging into the uterine cavity, often cause heavy bleeding and fertility issues.
- Pedunculated: Attached by a stalk, inside or outside the uterus.
Treatment options
- Watch & wait if small and asymptomatic.
- Medications: hormonal birth control, GnRH agonists, tranexamic acid.
- Minimally invasive: uterine artery embolization, MRI-guided focused ultrasound.
- Surgical: myomectomy (preserves uterus), hysterectomy (definitive).
