What is perimenopause?
The transition phase leading up to menopause, often starting in your 40s (sometimes mid-30s) and lasting 4–10 years. Estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, then gradually decline.
The stages
- Early perimenopause: Cycles still mostly regular, subtle changes in flow or length.
- Mid perimenopause: Cycles vary by 7+ days, more skipped periods, sleep & mood shifts.
- Late perimenopause: 60+ day gaps between periods, hot flashes intensify.
- Menopause: 12 consecutive months with no period.
