What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag, Without Overpacking
You need far less than the internet says, and a few things nobody mentions. Here is the short, sane list.

Pack in three bags, not one
One small bag for labor, one for after the birth, one for baby. It keeps your partner from unpacking everything on the floor at 3am looking for lip balm.
For labor
Comfort first. You will not care what you look like.
- Long phone charger and a portable battery
- Lip balm, hair ties, a soft robe
- Flip flops for the shower
- Snacks and an electrolyte drink for your partner and for after
- Your birth preferences, printed
For after
The first days are leaky and tender. Dress for that.
- Dark, loose clothes and high waisted underwear
- Nursing bra or comfortable soft bra
- Your own pillow in a colored pillowcase
- Toiletries, glasses instead of contacts
- A going home outfit that fits at six months pregnant
What you can leave at home
Newborn diapers, pads, mesh underwear, and towels are usually provided. Special outfits, heavy makeup, and jewelry stay home.
