Low Libido While Breastfeeding, You Are Not Broken

Almost nobody warns you that desire can go quiet while you are feeding. It is hormonal, it is common, and it is not permanent.

The hormones behind it

Breastfeeding keeps prolactin high and oestrogen low. Low oestrogen means less natural lubrication and thinner vaginal tissue. High prolactin dampens desire directly. Add broken sleep and being touched all day, and desire has very little room left.

Touched out is a real thing

When a small person has been on your body for fourteen hours, more touch can feel like too much. That is sensory overload, not rejection of your partner. Naming it out loud takes most of the sting out of it.

What actually helps

  • A good lubricant, generously and without embarrassment
  • Slower warm up, your body needs longer than it used to
  • Non sexual touch that belongs only to the two of you
  • Twenty minutes of nobody touching you before intimacy
  • Talking to a provider about vaginal oestrogen if dryness is painful

A word for your partner

This is not about attraction fading. It is a hormonal season with an end. What helps most is patience, practical help with the load, and affection that expects nothing.

Plant this thought

Your desire is not gone. It is resting while your body does something enormous.
