Rest Is Not a Reward You Have to Earn

You do not have to finish the list to deserve the nap. Rest is maintenance, not a prize.

Where the guilt comes from

Many of us learned that worth is measured in output. So rest gets filed under laziness, and we only allow it once the house is quiet and every task is finished, which is to say almost never.

What exhaustion is asking for

Tiredness that sleep does not fix is usually not a sleep problem. It is often unrelenting decision making, emotional labour, or a nervous system that has not felt safe in a long while.

Rest in four forms

Sleep is only one kind. Try naming what you are actually missing:

  • Physical rest, stillness or gentle movement
  • Sensory rest, quiet, dim light, no screens
  • Emotional rest, saying the true thing to a safe person
  • Social rest, time not performing for anybody

Plant this thought

You do not have to earn your rest. You only have to allow it.

Try it in Flè Lavi
